The Truth About Jesse Jackson Comes Out

Jesse Jackson would be incensed if any of us used the "N-word," but according to the Associated Press, Fox News is now saying that Jackson used the most hated racial slur in American English with some level of impunity in the same conversation where the microphone was turned on and Big Jesse declared his intention to castrate Barack Obama:

The Rev. Jesse Jackson used an emotionally charged racial slur during a
break in a TV interview in which he criticized presidential candidate Barack
Obama, Fox News confirmed Wednesday.

In additional comments from that same conversation, first reported by
TVNewser, the African-American leader is reported to have said Obama was
"talking down to black people," and referred to blacks with a slur commonly
referred to as the N-word when he said Obama was telling them "how to
behave."

So Jackson, the so-called "civil rights leader" (I think the notion that he is really a leader of anyone or anything is finally being put to bed, thank God) referred to African-Americans as "n*****s," while purporting to stand for so-called equality. While we know that it has become common among African-Americans to use the Hated Word among themselves as a term of endearment or even self-description, Jackson's use of the verbal loaded gun makes him a hypocrit:

Jackson has called on the entertainment industry, including rappers, actors and
studios, to stop using the N-Word. He also urged the public to boycott
purchasing DVD copies of the TV sitcom "Seinfeld" after co-star Michael Richards
was taped using the word during a rant at a Los Angeles comedy club in 2006.

Jesse wants to censor others, but he will not bide his own tongue. The truth about Jesse Jackson is finally coming to light after all these years for the world to see-the man is not a leader, he's just an uppity busybody.

It is the double standard at work. We (of Rev. Jackson's ilk) want to tell conservatives and others who do not agree with our way of thinking what to say and what to do in life.

Just don't hold us to that same standard or your are a racist, bigoted, homophobic boob that doesn't know anything.

NAJEE ALI: An open letter to Rev. Jesse Jackson, Sr.

July 10, 2008

*Rev Jackson, your vulgar tirade caught on tape by Fox News where you said you wanted to cut Barack Obama's nuts off and accusing him of talking down to Black folks by giving moral lectures at churches is the last straw for me and a growing number of African Americans who are outraged at your comments.

There are many Blacks across the nation, myself included, who are appreciative for the work and contributions you have made in your civil rights career. But at this point, you're hurting Black America and Obama.

In September 2007 it was clear that you were frustrated by Obama, when you stated in an interview in South Carolina that Obama needs to stop acting white, because you felt he was not engaged in the Jena 6 movement enough to your liking.

Rev Jackson your continued verbal attacks on Obama are unwarranted it's as if you're jealous that Obama has eclipsed you and both your campaigns for the Democratic nomination by actually preparing to win it as the 2008 presumptive nominee.

Jesse Jackson & Barack Obama

For years you have been criticized as an ambulance chaser and opportunist. Many of Dr. King's insiders and aides say that King did not trust you. 40 years ago in Memphis as King lay dying from an assassin's bullet your first thought and action was to smear your shirt with Dr. King's blood.

You then proceeded to appear in Chicago the next day on several news programs wearing the same shirt you deliberately smeared with his blood as if you were the heir of King's movement. Obama's recent comments about Black fathers not abandoning their children and accepting moral responsibility in our lives is a lesson you apparently needed to learn when you were younger. If you had, it may not have caused you to cheat on your wife and father a child out of wedlock with a former staffer.

Maybe that's what really bothered you about Obama's message to the church that Black fathers should be responsible for their children; you certainly haven't been.

Jesse Jackson and daughter Ashley

Living in Los Angeles I have watched your ten year old daughter Ashley Laverne Jackson grow up. Over the years I have had the pleasure to spend several holidays with your daughter including Christmas, her birthday parties and other milestones in her life. I will never turn my back on Ashley her mom and their family. It's about providing friendship, support and love to them while you have been missing in action.

Your daughter has never traveled or taken a trip with you, you have an annual birthday party in Beverly Hills every year where your entire family is welcome but your youngest child has only attended it once. She has had very little contact with her siblings and has never even met her big brother Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr, who apparently doesn't want anything to do with her. And allegedly (I believe it to be true ), he was the one to leak the scandal to the media concerning your affair. Now don't get me wrong, Obama is not above reproach. He is a politician and is fair game to be fairly criticized by you or anyone else. But to personally attack Obama is crossing the line. Obama is not talking down to Black people; he wants you and other dead beat dads to spend time and care for your children properly. The destruction of the Black family and absentee fathers is a major problem in our community.

It's a problem that King spoke out and fought against. 40 years after King's murder I can see why King didn't trust you. If you can't and won't sincerely help Obama in this historic run then at least stop attacking him. Listen to Obama's message of being a responsible father and start taking care of your daughter Ashley.

What a non-issue! White racists have always defended their use of "nigger" by saying "They call themselves that!" and anti-racists have always rightly responded that who uses a word can make a world of difference. African-Americans routinely call one another "boy" and "girl", as well as "nigger", and white folks have no business objecting to it. I can call my friends all kinds of names that would be offensive if I used them towards strangers. It's called "familiarity".

I'm not a particular fan of Jesse Jackson, but there are far better reasons to criticize him than his use of Black American vernacular.

Is it such a good idea to call Jesse Jackson 'uppity'? Isn't that the ultimate racist slur against upwardly mobile African-Americans? Jackson is a jerk, no matter what his ethnic background. He is jealous of Obama for doing what he could not do. This is more of a generational battle than anything else.

I think that JJ is done. He has done nothing to help the black community excpt engage in shakedowns of company's threatening to make up bogus racist statements about their hiring/promotion practices unless they pay JJ. He has never been a leader of the Black Community. Like Sharpton, he is about himself.

Now Obama steps up and takes his people to task and makes them ask themselves hard questions. JJ doesn't like it because if the black community is asked to improve themselves then JJ can't blame their plight on everyone but themselves.

JJ is old news. His time has come and gone. He is jealous that Obama has succeeded where he has failed. Further, if a black man becomes President, JJ's everyone is prejudice/racist game will be up. He will have nothing to do but, oh, that's right, go back to his adulterous ways and have more kids that he can abandon.

Don't let the door slam you in the you know what.

Oh good lord, people have gone mad. There are many ways to speak to people respectfully without suggesting their bad, flawed or "evil." Barack Obama chose to lecture, judge and degrade. This is what Jackson was upset about. It wasn't a black/white issue, it wasn't a pre-civil rights/post-civil rights issue, it was a question of simple respect for your fellow human beings. There are more effective way to speak with others, especially if you want to encourage them to make more responsible decisions in the future.
Jackson responded protectively when he saw a group of people being berated. Many of us did.
If you disrepect and insult others, brace yourself, it will come back at you. If you speak to people as if they are adults, just like you, they will respond in kind.
Obama could have told a personal story, he could have celebrated fathers who stood by their children even when the responsibity seemed overwhelming, instead he chose to wag his finger. That kind of behavior will always elicit a negative response. Now you guys are doing the same thing to Jesse Jackson. We're all adults. We all have good and bad in us. "Judge not, lest you be judged."

Black people commonly refer to each other by the N-word. This blog author obviously does not understand the social context in which the word was most likely used. You lose credibility when you take something inconspicuous such as this out of context and blow it out of proportion; but then again, this is so typical of the Fox News agenda.

I am not a black American, but I am glad that "Black America" is beginning to see Jesse Jackson for what he is... A hate mongering man that claims to be flying the racial freedom flag. When in fact Jesse Jackson clings to an age old philosophy that has become rhetoric in recent years: "White America" doesn't want "Black America" to succeed. Mr. Jackson's time has past, black America is not where it was 30 years ago and many minorities not only blacks have made numerous leaps in the struggle for racial equality, in fact I think there is a black man running for president that will probably win. I am not blind to the fact that there are racists out there(on both sides), but it's time that 'ALL' Americans to take responsibility for their actions and what they make of their lives, rather than hiding behind racial bigotry, parents, society, lack of opportunity, etc.

P.S. I call him Mr. Jackson, because no Reverend I've met ever talked like that!!

Jackson blew it on this one, and this behavior is probably part of a larger pattern. But we would be going to far were we to call him irrelevant or discount his long career. There are tensions in what is obviously an African-American community in transition. Alas, though, it seems that the author chooses to avoid the sort of nuance that might be viewed as critical at such a juncture. Jesse Jackson was and is an important and brilliant leader in the civil rights movement. Should Barack Obama be elected president, we should all assume that (in deep symbolic terms) Jim Crow is dead. And Jim Crow was/is the raison d'tre of the movement of Dr. King and of Mr. Jackson. It is a too common event in history - the poignant moment when a great leader realizes that he/she has served so well that their leadership is no longer required. Such can be a painful reckoning. We need not rub salt in such a wound. Indeed, we should honor the transition, gentling it where possible. Oh . . . almost forgot: Tossing the "uppity" bomb hardly hits the target - really quite sophomorish.

I'm well aware of the social context, I'm well aware of the total unacceptability of non-African Americans using that word, and I'm well aware that there is division even in the African American community over its use. I've listened to Dave Chappelle, Chris Rock, etc. using it. I would never use it (I'm white). None of that is the point.

The point is that Reverend Jackson himself has called on the African American community not to use it. While the argument can be made that he is a bigot ("Hymietown") no one thinks that he intends to degrade the African American community. He's clearly a publicity hungry hypocrite.

That's hardly a news flash though.

Jesse Jackson is not a Christian reverend because he does not represent Jesus. I pray that Jesse will repent and stop being hateful and a racist. He needs to ask himself before he talks "what would Jesus say about this". Jesse, repent the Lord is not pleased with you. Judgment day is coming and you will be judged. Also, be a responsible father to the girl you fathered out of wedlock. That's what Jesus would want you to do.

He has never done anything for the black community except hold us back and try to make us reliant on his kind of hatred (Al Sharpton, too). I for one am glad that people are able to see his true colors now and how he tries to keep the nation divided racially. Had it not been for the likes of Jackson and Sharpton, we would be a lot farther down the road to equality. These two only care about themselves and have to feel as though their life has meaning(which it doesn't because of the turmoil they cause). It's time we sttod up, Black America, and told these two jokers "no thanks, we don't need you anymore."

Jesse Jackson is NOT a civil rights activist. It's the morons in the media who gave him that title. People evalute his actions against what they perceive a civil rights activist to be and then are outraged by his behavior.

Think of Jesse Jackson as a racial entreprenuer. He exploits racism (real or perceived) and uses it to make money for himself. Basically he is nothing but a hustler and a pimp. When you view him in that light everything he does makes perfect sense.

I am elated to see "Reverend" Jackson (because he is not a reverend, but bullied a teacher into giving him that title), finally get outed for the two faced hypocritical racial pimp that he is. It is even more gratifying to see so many people in the black community start to realize that he is not a leader, but a shakedown artist who uses racial issues to make himself wealthy and get him publicity. I ENCOURAGE EVERYONE TO GO READ A BOOK CALLED "SHAKEDOWN". Regardless of what you thought of Jesse Jackson before, you will be disgusted at what this man has done to the black community, US taxpayers, and business owners around the country. If there ever was a justifiable person to call the N word, it would be Jesse Jackson- God knows he has been using that word referring to his own people for years, while he publically chastizes others for doing the same.

So many misunderstandings, so little time:
1. I have little respect for posters who can't even spell "Reverend". Additionally, and I am not religious, you don't need to graduate from college or even ordained to be titled "Reverend". It is often given out of respect.
2. Why is it that everyone has jumped to the conclusion that he is somehow jealous of Barack Obama's success. Just because the white-owned media made this assumption to help explain his statements does not make it true
3. What Jackson said was meant to be off-mic, or, in other-words, in private. I am sure that he still beleives that the N-word should not be used but I think he intended that for the public domain, not in private conversation. I have no problem with african-americans calling each other the "n-word" - that is just part of their cultural background and colloquilism. The problem is if they use this vernacular in the poublic domain - then it takes on a new meaning and is, indeed not only hypocritical but also hurtful. In the same vien, it is fine to censor certain words when used in piblic, but there is no way we can police people from using these words in private conversations.

How we think he appears in society is irrelevant to who and what he is as a human being.

Race is a fallacy. It only matters because we've been told it does. Breaking the cycle of mental slavery will be a hard task to accomplish.

Finally, Fox News deliberately left the mic 'hot' to catch Jesse in the moment. The media isn't your friend, folks. Today, they are in the business of making money off of sensationalized material -- Not actual journalism (Americans would be bored to tears with anything of substance and truth).

You would rather he pamper you and tell you that this kind of behavior is ok and that it isn't your fault. That's what Jackson would tell you. He always tells you what you WANT to hear instead of the truth. I just wish that the black community would get fed-up with that RACIST HATE-MONGER and tell him where he can go! Straight to HELL! And no, it doesn't matter who uses the N-word, or how they use it, it IS NOT acceptable! It is an ignorant, racist, hatefull term that should never be used under any circumstances. Jackson needs to shut his mouth and be happy with the MILLIONS he has made by being a human leach upon his people. And his comment about Obama "acting White" is as insulting as it gets!
Obama isn't "acting white," he is meerly using correct English, and acting in an intelligent, respectfull, and responcible manner. The truth is, "Reverend" Jackson has no right to criticize anyone. It doesn't matter what I think about Jesse's use of the word. It doesn't matter what African American's think about that word.

Jesse Jackson has tried to make a living on the idea that he is trying to pull Americans together into a community where race is a non-issue. Jesse himself set that word outside of what is acceptable. Jesse then uses the word in a way that he says is derogatory toward the community that he says he represents.

He looked down his nose to challenge the entertainment industry to exclude this word from their vernacular. Mr Jackson has made a living from his ability to mold his thoughts into the English language. Couldn't he have found another word?

Mr Jackson's livelihood depends on feed the friction between the races. I hope that we as a nation are learning that lesson.

More respectable ways to talk to the black community then the approach Obama took?

Anonymous wrote:
"Jackson responded protectively when he saw a group of people being berated. Many of us did.
If you disrespect and insult others, brace yourself, it will come back at you. If you speak to people as if they are adults, just like you, they will respond in kind."

Really, then why did Jackson call the Black Community "niggers"?

You do see the contradiction right? Especially since he's advocated against using the term.

Bottom line to answer your post is this:

You argue that if Obama would have talked to the community with respect they would have responded better. Don't you think if the "nice talk, pat on the back" approach was effective, that it would have helped African Americans long ago. Black people in their own community have been quietly whispering amongst themselves for years what Obama was brave enough to call people out on.

You want change? You want equality? Fine, but don't think for a second that some of the change and equality doesn't have to come from black people bettering themselves as part of the fabric of that change.

We have heard about Jesse for years and from time to time get to see him figuratively donning sack cloth and ashes to apologize for insensitive remarks (remember Hymietown?). This is yet another example of his poor behavior.

Certainly we shouldn’t expect perfection from anyone but can’t we reasonably expect more from a civil rights, political and religious leader than racist hypocritical comments?

Mr. Jackson is referred to as a Reverend. My reading of the good book tell me that "by their fruits you may know them". It seems the fruits are telling us that perhaps we are looking at a wolf in sheeps clothing.

Jesse – your 15 minutes are up. Time for someone else to take the spotlight. Your flock deserves better.

WOW some great responses here especially the one that credits the media for "handing" the title of Civil Rights Activist" to JJ. handed it to him on a silver platter I say. (much like FOX newses "Fair and Balanced" reporting. Fox doesn't report news, they create it by stringing together speaking points to create a news story (off subjet here sorry).
back to JJ: As for racial equality, the country has moved far beyond what JJ can possibly understand, he is just out of touch, yet JJ still will do anything to "create" a situation where JJ can be the "Center" of attention, Mr. Jackson, we don't care about you and your mission (focusing on you) any longer. This also goes for his buddy AL SHARPTON (did we forget Tawana Brawley, i didn't) AL GET OFF THE STAGE. At a time, years ago, it was perceived to be about the event, the cause, the change... we finally have someone like Sen. Obama, someone America can believe in and there's Mr. Jackson, trying to hold onto his coat tails (bloody shirt of MLK and coat tails of Sen. Obama) hmmm Modus operandi Mr. Jackson ? ? ? it's hard to hear, but Mr. Jackson, it's time to retire, ride off into the sunset and let those who know how do to it...DO IT !

Mr. Jackson has a marvelous way of riding the gravy train of the "racial" issue for decades now. We see his face whenever there is a controversial discussion about race. His spiritual and pure commitment to the "cause" is nothing more than a game he has been playing with his media buddies for years. Some may recall some of the highly questionable financial charade this man of "the cloth" has been involved with.

Its just like Nas said, his time is up. He is no longer the man he used to be when he was involved in civil rights. He is no longer the center of focus in the black community and now that we have Obama in the forefront, he is becoming jealous and is attacking him so that he will recieve the publicity and attention that he is no longer getting.

As far as using the N word, what made that situation bad was the fact that he was such an advocate against it, that he is now portrayed as a hypocrite.

There are new African American political activsts that are more in tune to what the America of today needs. There are topics that needed to be addressed such as the lack of black fathers being involved in their children's lives. Right now we are about change, however Jesse is trying to keep us where we are that way we can always label others as our oppressors, when in reality, unfortunately, we are sometimes hindering our own advancement. You can't always blame someone else for your mistake, its time to stand up and take responsibility for your actions...

I'll not think of Mr. Jackson the same way. I was shocked to learn about what he said. He wanted to cut off Obama's nuts? Is that legal? Is that enobling of the causes for which people strive and struggle their entire lives? I knew he had a hush-baby years back and tried to ignore it. Obama is correct to say that family unity helps build communities, but that doesn't mean Obama's special. I've heard that stuff a million times. Single-parent families have a lot of obstacles, but that's a reality that can be altered with community involvement. You don't need to be a government politician to be a good neighbor.

On the N word...I am white, and where I work, there are about sixty black people and six or seven white people working together every day. I have never heard the N word used at work. Never. That makes me happy. Bloody nuts rolling around on the ground makes me sad.

Jessie is just jealous. I suppose this comment was directed to someone in his peanut gallery. His whole scene is bogus. He's mad at Obama for wanting to unite humanity? it reminds me of the Dave Chapelle skit where Dave's a blind KKK guy who doesn't know he's black.

Black, white, green, who cares! Let's get rid of fossil fuels together!

Hmmm...let's see here....my parents immigrated here in the 1930's. There was ramparnt discrimination against them because they were different and did not speak the language. Ok, fine. This is about par for every ethnic group that comes here. If you notice the Irish, Italians, Germans, Jews, Polish, etc, etc all came here and faced similar obstacles. They all seemed to succeed without welfare, affirmative action and all the other bullshit social programs. Even today the asians are succeeding just fine with almost no help from the government. Now, let's consider the niggers. Oops..sorry Jesse, the African Americans. They were and still are handed everything and still can't seem to progress beyond their most basic "talents" of sex and violence. Free education, health care, food stamps, public assistance..and whatever else they can get from America they have squandered. They let idiots like JJ and Al Sharpton lead them. Why? because most of them are so fucking simple minded they can't get past their own stupidity. True, many blacks have worked hard, like my parents did) and beat the system. They have proven to be successful and respectable. I will happily call those people americans, friends, equals. However, the rest from that race are just sucking america dry with the help of "leaders" like the "Reverends" JJ and AS. This is ridiculous. Obama is a pretty educated (albiet racist) guy. His lovely wife is even more rabidly racist, as we all know. Is this guy and his white hater wife right for america? You know, the blacks will turn out in droves to vote for him based only on his skin color...just exactly what they have been telling whites NOT to do for the last 50 years. What a joke! I hope he is solidly defeated in November. We don't need a Muslim in office, either. That is another story altogether.

Thinking that because someone is of a specific color means that he/she has to behave in a certain way, i.e. according to standards of a supposedly proper conduct (stereotype) is being utterly racist. I always found that those self-proclaimed black leaders were actually being thoroughly racist in their understanding of what meant being black in a democracy -that clearly had some problems to accept some difference internally. Striving for being recognized as a full human being, regardless of my creeds, colors etc. (but taking account of the fact that others pay attention to my color for fighting efficiently) is what the fight should be all about. Who are they to say that someone should behave according to his/her stereotype, which presently seems to be defined by a dominant culture (historically tractable in the south) that is clearly a culture of failure.
Thank you for providing this tribune

As a 75 year old white American from the deep south I’ve heard a lifetime of stories from both sides in the racial debate. But when someone like JJ and/or AS makes their living creating controversy over the subject I wonder why anyone listens to them. Quite truthfully over the years I’ve heard “Blacks need to take some responsibility for their own position in Life”. I agree that what Obama and Bill Cosby says about black fathers (and by implication those women who can’t keep themselves from getting pregnant) not facing the responsibility of their own part in sex is part and parcel of the problems the black community faces. Until someone stands up and tells REV Wright (Or is it REV Wrong) to shut up and preach American and not Black Street Talk things don’t have a prayer of changing. It isn’t what JJ said; or what Tawanya did that got AS famous; or what rev wrong spoke that has the bad connotation but that few or no blacks have spoken up to say “You’re wrong” that turns off the base of the population. It isn’t necessary to go back any further than 9-11 to understand the lashing out at the Muslims was exactly what brought the black people over their response to a behavior by people of their race. How many Muslims condemned the actions of Muslims on that fateful day? And today how many Blacks are equally at ease condemning the actions of those out of the herd Blacks? Blacks need to act like they aren’t Black but act as Americans and be proud of that fact. That includes Obama’s mouthy wife.

I don't interpret Jackson's use of the word as a slur. The way I hear it he's emphasizing his point about "talking down." He doesn't like Obama "telling n__ how to behave" because it reflects or encourages an attitude towards black people as n__ who need to be told how to behave. Admittedly, this is the generous interpretation, but I also think it's the most plausible one.

One can still object that he should completely avoid all uses of the word. Apparently he has pushed for people to do just that. But I agree with those who say the word gains power as the taboo becomes stronger. I think what he said has communicative value in the right context, but a FOX studio is not the right context.

Robert, I see where you are trying to go with this. At least, maybe I do.

Unity is defined as absence of diversity; unvaried or uniform character.

Jesse Jackson himself with his comments is displaying the opposite of what you are asking the American people to do on his behalf.

The United States has historically swept the issues of it's people under the carpet for what "was best for everyone".

I think at least, that I understand that you want to not "blow this" by creating separation at a time in our history where we are so close to having a Black president.

I would shudder at the thought that disgust for JJ is going to Jeopardize Obamas chances.

If that's true, one he didn't deserve to be president in the first place, and two, we have way more issues then can be discussed in this blog.

Let people speak their minds, make they're opinions. It's a freedom we have, that "Unifies" us all.

I am so tired of Jesse Jackson and other minorities in the media pointing the racism finger when blacks get treated by whites as whites treat each other. No white person I know has to walk around on tip toes and constantly self censor his speech to avoid offending other white people but we're expected to do so with regard to blacks or be called racists by leeches like Jesse Jackson. It's about time he gets a dose of his own medicine and have his true thoughts exposed. And maybe now the black community at large will stop buying into his weak BS and recognize him for what he is. He should really stop manipulating and leeching off people and get a real job.

Jesse has put the feet of the black community in concrete. Since MLK died the message has not been about "dreams" but about entitlement. If you say something over and over, people will believe. The people in the black community who work hard, stay out of trouble, and are contributing positively to society are the ones who suffer the most from the rhetoric of the dual reverends. Their efforts are in vain when non-black Americans cannot get past racism because it is so forcefully shoved down their throats on a daily basis. Racism exists today because it has been fostered by the so called black leadership.

Slavery does exist today. The black community has been mentally enslaved to believe that everyone is out to get them and that the only way to live is through promiscuity and violence. Those are the traits of an underdeveloped populace.

Robert...in general you have said thoughtful and insightful things, but you mentioned something that, to me, cuts to the heart of the problem and is very revealing. You replied to a post and mentioned:

"white people don't have all the constant negative stereotypes and depictions that we have,at least for them there is a balance of those depictions in society"

I don't see what the point of your comment is, except to say that "black people have it worse than whites." That is a horrendous oversimplification that blurs the point.

Across race and class lines there are stereotypes, hardships, and problems. The part that frustrates me is that there is this pervasive, unsupported myth that "white folks have things easier." The only possible accurate statement would be "rich people have it easier."

Michael Jordan's kids have EVERY door open for them, and guess what...he's black. Some of the kids I see going through the prosecutor's office where I worked were poor and white and they had no chance. It's not so much about race any more as it is about poverty.

It may have been true during the times where racism was not ILLEGAL, that whites had it "easier" across the board by virtue of their race, but now it is flat out illegal to discriminate. In fact, if you get caught committing a crime on the basis of race, you go to jail for a longer sentence.

Right now, the only negative stereotypes about blacks, whites, or anyone is what they put forward themselves.

Look at Katrina. It's a perfect example of the cult of personality that Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton have created...the black population of Louisiana is mired in self pity and still to this day trying to recover. What about the Vietnamese fishermen that were decimated by the hurricane. They lost their livelihood and their homes. Nobody heard them whining and saying "why me?" They have rebuilt and moved on, and are not mired in self-pity.

Bill Cosby had it right...it's about personal responsibility. There's no longer a place for people talking about what society does to them.

I regret that this has turned into a stream of consciousness...I meant it to be more focused. My point is this:

Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton have eviscerated the civil rights movement because they have made it about finding extrinsic reasons for all shortcomings of black americans. Only rarely will a figure, like Bill Cosby, speak about personal responsibility. When he does, he is shouted down. Until "black america" accepts responsibility for its own failures and moves beyond them will there be no more "stereotypes."

A good start might be for black adults, like you Robert, who remember the 60's, to start washing the kids' mouths out with soap who throw around "nigger" like a term of affection. If the word is so bad that a white person cannot say it, why should a black person say it?

Thanks for your thoughtful comments. I just think you're missing the mark slightly.

But do you see some of the nasty, racist rhetoric spewed by many commenters to this blog? Is this the kind of readership you have? Is this the kind of people that are a "Christ, the teachings of His Holy Church, and of the basic vision of a Christian social morality"? And calling JJ "uppity" (a longstanding racial slur against upwardly mobile blacks)? JJ is a hypocrite, no doubt about it. But looking at the company you keep, and some of your own choice of words... makes me wonder if you're not a hypocrite yourself.

Jesse is no longer black, he is now GREEN with envy that he is no longer at the back of the bus where he can whine about it. The bus has left without him!!!

Jesse Jackson has lost his influence and his way. Too bad. He could have been such a powerful force if he had kept a humanitarian goal in mind and not his "ME FIRST" attitude and approach. By the way, I have read a lot of the other comments -- Gud Lawd. Eye haf neva scene sew manny missspelled werds en mi lif.

Jesse Jackson is a moron, why black people even listen to him is beyond me. Every time he opens his mouth something stupid comes out

Yes, we should stop listening to Jesse Jackson and any other person that uses offensive and hateful language. But in the meantime, he should at least apologize for his highly offensive remarks, like Don Imus did. His loss, though. Barack's not going to be inviting Mr. Jackson to any more events. By the way, Obama is not a Muslim. He's said that. Lots of times.
http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/muslim.asp Bam! It's snopes. Great stuff. Besides, race, political party and religion should not matter when choosing a President. He's the guy or gal that'll be leading the country and making all the important decisions for the next four years. Pick your President based on the candidates' policies and prior voting records, not by race or anything like that. The Founding Fathers, whatever their other faults, (Hancock was a smuggler, the Sons of Liberty were terrorists by definition. Look it up!)did not even think about political parties when they set up the nation. Don't vote Republican. Don't vote Democrat. Don't vote Independant, Libertarian, or Green Party. Vote for the person whose vision you want to see during the next four years.

Jesse jus mad cause honkies be talkin like bros- so he try to out N____ the community- its kool when bros use it with bros- but not Kool when others use it? please- Jesse is so yesterday. His Hymietown comments showed years ago he has clay feet- the temerity of his going to the White House with his pregnant girlfriend- and now barely acknowledging her existence- coupled with his son making millions preying on the community with his beer distributorship- a bribe, no doubt to Big Daddy- show him to be what he truly is - a modern day stepenfetchit with a big mouth

The author makes some good points. You can't publicly crucify other people for using a word and then turn around and use it yourself and not expect a scandal to be made of it...to say little of castration. While Fox News used dirty tricks to get this, they never could have gotten it if Jesse would have watched his mouth...especially while sitting on a set in a nationwide news studio.

I think Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would have a very difficult time justifying the notion that they are indeed not racists, but rather civil leaders...for their actions and words display the very traits they claim to abhor...Where are they in forming demonstrations, picket lines, boycotts against a black dicator like Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe who is denying the will of the Zimbabwean people, denying an individual's right to vote? but yet were extremely active in the protests against the apartheid goverment of South Africa that denied the will of the South African people..denied the individual's right to vote...but now they are silent...for in Zimbabwe its black on black...but if it was white on black, they would make their voices heard...
I think the average person can see through their hypocrisy..

On another note, where is Al Sharpton and how come he is not all over the airwaves asking for Dr. Jackson's head like he did with Don Imus and the lacrosse boys back in NC?

A real double standard at work

"Doctor" Jackson? That title is an absolute abomination. That nigger is no more a "doctor" than he is a "reverend". Why do people foist these high and mighty titles on such a lowlife piece of shit? It's about time America stopped this PC shit.

I am so sick and tried of all the racist illiterate ignored, miseducated, misinformed, gun totting hillbillies, trailer park whites who write these sick comments and don't have the balls to leave their names. First of all common sense will tell you that a true Muslin will not spend twenty years in a Christian church. Yes, despite his behavior, Rev. Jackson has a degee, so to those of you who have no balls get your facts straight before commenting. Those of you who like to use the n word well I understand your need to put people down because you are already so low to the ground. I'll pray for those of you who fit this category. You know who you are.

Marle, how do you know the poster is white? Uh-oh! You have really done it this time, my nigger. It seems marle is also guilty of dicscrimination as well as not knowing when to use a comma in plain english. At least in my trailer park we were taught how to use punctuation. What do they teach in your 'hood? Gun cleaning and drug dealing? LOL!!! Us niggers deserve what we get, which is to say NOTHING.

Marle,
Black Obama is a muslim pig no matter what you say. He is doing the work of any good islamist which is "trying" to take America over. Look what they did to europe. Sickening. He'll die trying as will the rest of you. Then you can all be united with your bullshit prophet. What a crock of shit! Fuck Farakan, Obama and his lovely racist pig wife, and most of all, fuck all muslims! You pig shit mother fuckers need to go back where you came from.

Also JJ was "bestowed" his degree as a way to shut him up, not because he earned it. You niggers only know how to take. Giving of yourselves is not a consideration. Your race is doomed to failure as evidenced by your lack of assimilation even though you have been given every unfair advantage since the 50's.

Marle, you are reprehensible! First you discriminate against whites by assuming the poster was white based on comments and then you assume all whites are gun toting (correct spelling, BTW), trailer trash and whatever else you leveled at white people. It is YOU are are a racist!

PS. Jesse Jackson is a slimedog. How can you stand up for such a man? He has a degree and...so what? Maybe YOU need a degree...in rational behavior.

I apologize if you misunderstood and thought that I was standing up for him. I agree with some of the comments. I wrote what I wrote to get the feedback that I did, when the shoe is on the other foot it feels different. If you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen. However, I stick by my comments if you all have any balls don't be anonymous. Also, by your comments I know that you are bigots. For your information I do have advance degrees and there are no degrees in rational behavior, try psychology or behavior science. You assumed that I am of color. I'm not. Again, this proves that you are miseducated, and misinformed. Get a life and your facts right. JJ is whatever you want him to be in your head and that's your problem not mine, as mention previously, I will pray for you all. PS. Maybe you could use a degee in forgiveness and not so much hate. However, the fact remain that all who responded to my comments none of you have any college backgroud or degrees. English, Islamic and Europe are all captialized because they are proper names. English which I assume you are trying to speak came from the country England. Go back to school and learn how to spell and write. Whatever, Obama is none of you will ever reach his level in life or in education. You all will remain just miserable, lonely racist, acting as victims searching for people to put down. Poor souls, Oops forgot you don't understand English poor soles.

Totally incomprehensible babbling. Judging from your poor command of the English language and the omission of basic punctuation it is easy to know that whatever color you are, you missed or completely ignored your english teacher. Or perhaps your english teacher and evidently yourself, too, were victims of the "dumbing down" of America which occurred to help Blacks feel more self worth. Whatever degree you hold is actually worth only about half. Thank the Libtards!

JJ is not what I want him to be in my head. He is guided by his own selfish motivations. Don't put his dispicible behavior on anyone other them him.

Please don't pray for me if you are a muslim. I don't need forgiveness from your false profit.
