Hippies Singing Okie

To be filed under "hilarious" and "bizarre" is this footage of The Beach Boys singing Okie From Muskogee to a crowd full of hippies in Central Park in July, 1971.

Not so bizarre; as I understand it, the song was written with tongue firmly in cheek.

Actually, no it wasn't Joe-that has become a popular myth of late, but Merle Haggard himself has admitted that this is not true. He was, he admits, quite in sympathy with the conservative tendencies in the South and West during that time period, and to The Tennessean at the beginning of the year, he admitted that he was supporting Hillary Clinton this year after having voted Republican for years on end.

It does make one curious who he will support in the fall, but I doubt he'll share that information.

Actually, Merle has been both a liberal and a Democrat for years.

Ms. Cobb I must respectfully disagree with you on this as I happen to know for a fact he has supported republicans on many occasions.

Fabian--
I've known Merle since 1986, and he's a liberal. He may have voted for Republicans in the past, but he is a liberal.

My ex husband got Merle and Willie in the divorce, but these guys used to come over and we'd talk and they would all...uh...practice Indian herbal medicine all night, and Willie is socialist liberal and Merle is moderate liberal.

In the 70s Merle was more conservative, but by the time I met him, he was moderate.

Hehe...With Homeland Security watching everyone, we have to get creative with our metaphors, sometimes. ;)
