I come out in support of Nashville blogger Sharon Cobb in her latest foray with federal officials.

Hi Dave,
I just got around to listening to this show.
Thank you so much for the call and support. It's clear you grasp how dangerous our own government has become with shredding the Constitution with the Patriot Act.
Before getting questioned by Homeland Security on Jan. 20, 2005, I never thought something like this could happen to a law abiding citizen in America. I was wrong.
So when I got a Census form a few weeks ago--not in a Census year, I didn't want to answer it. They guarantee it's all about stats and nothing personal and no way to identify the person answering, and as you saw, they sent me a follow up letter with my name on it. Then another. They're at my front door, in the mail and on the phone.
Kind of overkill for a survey, don't ya think?
I don't know what to tell you about your notice. For me, it's a matter of principal. The Federal Government coming up with this new Census in between the 10 year Census doesn't sit well with me at all.
Why aren't are politicians trying to repeal the Patriot Act? (on both sides) Seems to me that would be a priority, and yet I don't recall any candidates of any stripe who are running for office mentioning repealing the Patriot Act.
Shouldn't that be a campaign issue?
To me it's at the heart of the Constitution--something both sides want to see relevant again in this country.
Donna Locke left me a post about how the government harassed her because of her activism with immigration reform.
It's outrageous. It's enough.
We have to take our country back and it won't matter who is in power if that power is omnipotent.

are=our on "our politicians..."
I hate when I do that!

On a brighter note, last night Jessica's Law passed a floor vote in the House, so it's a done deal.
Good work!

Sharon;
I find it awfully funny, don't you, that you have been a staunch vocal critic of the government on the Left and you received one of these "surveys," and I have been a staunch vocal critic of the government on the right and I also received one of these "surveys?"

I have been researching the U.S. Code. As with most federal regulations, they've given us the chapters where the regulation can be found but they do not bother with the subsection, making it hard to find and making us peons think that their word in omnipotent.

I have had to dig to find it, but I clearly found where they are given the ability in law to collect this information. What I have yet to find is anything that says that we can be compelled by force to answer them, or what punishment they can mete out if we do not.

A good friend of mine (the best man at my wedding) is an attorney who studied international law. He specializes in malpractice now, but he knows quite a bit of the federal code. Later today, I am sending him a .pdf of the entire survey. He has offered to take the time to check all of this out for me. Note that I also discovered that contrary to what they are telling us, they can share information with other federal departments.

It is none of their business how many rooms are in my house or the size of my property, which is among the questions they have asked. I am not refusing to answer these questions, but I will not do so until I am certain that this is all kosher.

I have grown up with a disability. This leads to enough government interference for many of us...I just want to be left alone.

I've been a staunch critic of our government on the Libertarian side and have not received one of these surveys.

In fact, I think I'm the only one of the three of us who has advocated taking up arms against tyranny.

And yet...no survey.
