Thanks, first of all, I know some read that insane internal dialogue last night.

Second, I understand the concern. Out West, we have perhaps a greater appreciation of history. Up near Idaho City the whole town is preserved, lots of old landmarks from the past hundred years dot Boise. We have many places in the national register of historic places, including several old houses down Warm Springs Blvd. which had natural geothermal heat.

Of course, preserving landmarks isn't a gimic for us, its part of our tourism and industry. People come out to Idaho and Montana to see the old West. That's why you can go down to Idaho City and see many houses and buildings standing that are 150 years old.

It may go back as well to what you've said previously about the continuing reconstruction. If everything and everyone prior to the 1960s was just really awful, why bother preserving it?

The nation's message to Southerners isn't about preserving heritage, preserving history, or any such thing. Its about your past being shameful and moving totally forward because their ancestors were completely bad with no redeeming qualities.

With such a powerful message, it becomes easy for people not to care about preserving heritage.
